Frequently asked questions

What to expect

How much freezer space will I need?

Our average half beef share will fit in a 8-10 cubic-foot freezer, and our whole beef shares will need twice that, so you’ll need a 18-20 cubic-foot freezer.

USDA guidelines state that frozen beef will be safe indefinitely. However, for best quality, use within 4-12 months.

Nope! You can purchase a side of beef (half), or individual premium steaks & cuts as available.

No, we do not offer processing services. As ranchers, our focus is on the health and welfare of our cattle so that we can bring you the best beef possible. We leave the skilled butchery to the pros at local Oklahoma processors. Once we receive your deposit, we’ll discuss harvest dates with you, and connect you directly to your butcher to discuss your custom cuts. You will responsible for paying your processor directly for their services at the time you pick up your meat.

Here at Shelter Creek Cattle Co, we charge based on hanging weight (vs. live weight) because we believe that it is a fairer representation of the amount of beef you will ultimately take home. We charge $5/lb of your steer’s actual hanging weight.

For example: if you are buying a half beef share and your side of beef weighs 300 lbs, your invoice from us would be for $1,500. Conversely, if you are buying a whole beef share and your whole carcass (both sides together) weighs 600 lbs, your invoice from us would be $3,000.

Rather than inflate our sales price to cover processing, we’ve opted to let you handle processing fees directly with your butcher. This saves you money, while also putting you in charge of exactly how your beef is cut. We believe you should get it just the way you like it, and that is the best part of custom processing. Processing fees will vary based on how you choose to butcher your animal.

Using the same half and whole weights as the example above, half share basic processing will average $375, and whole share basic processing will average $645. Keep in mind that specialty cuts and packaging can cost more.

Quantities are limited, so in order to secure your beef share we ask for a $500 deposit on all half and whole beef shares. 100% of your deposit goes toward the cost of your beef share.

Once we secure your deposit, we’ll discuss harvest dates, and connect you to your butcher. Since we charge based on hanging weight, we won’t know your total amount due until your steer’s butcher date. At that time, we’ll let you know your final invoice amount with your balance due (actual hanging weight minus your deposit). Final payments will be due to Shelter Creek Cattle Co. within 2 weeks of the final invoice.

While we could go on about how supporting local business helps build resiliency in our communities and that buying local means you know exactly where your beef comes from, the bottom line is that it just tastes better and it’s cost efficient too. We’d love to be your ranchers, your trusted source for high-quality, tender, nutritious beef, from our family to yours!

We do deliver locally by appointment with a $100 minimum order.
